Cleburne was founded in 1838 by John Cleburne and his family. The town became a vital center for the cattle-raising industry, and its businesses prospered until the late 1800s. By 1904, however, the population had dwindled to just over 100 residents, and the town's only commerce was prostitution. In 1932, a group of local businessmen purchased Cleburne from its last resident, Augustus Biesterfeld. They rebuilt it as a small but successful industrial city. Although Cleburne has since lost much of its former economic significance, it remains a popular tourist destination due to its fascinating history and scenic landscape.

Cleburne is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,694 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Johnson County after Huntsville. The first Cleburne settlement was built on an island in the Brazos River by pioneer farmers in 1836. The town's name comes from General James Cleburne and his 3rd Texas Infantry Regiment which fought in the Mexican–American War and were mustered out of service at Cleburne on October 10, 1846. Cleburne became a city on December 12, 1907 when it annexed the towns of Midlothian and Springdale. The annexation provided for equal voting rights for both cities combined. On February 17, 1915, President Woodrow Wilson delivered a speech from Mount Moriah Cemetery near Cleburne about American democracy including certain aspects such as suffrage for women and African Americans: "I am glad to be able to speak here today about Democracy itself – that great bulwark against tyranny – that guard against oligarchy and plutocracy; that give voice to all who are voiceless; that open door of access to all who are wanted." Cleburne is located at (29.819807,-93.023754). According to the 2010 census, its population was 9,694 residents. It has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water.[2]

Cleburne County was formed in 1836 from parts of Webb and Montero Counties. The county seat, Cleburne, was established in 1837. In 1840, the Republic of Texas was founded and Cleburne County became a part of the new state. The first courthouse in Cleburne County was built in 1840.
