Cleburne is a town in Hopkins County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Cleburne has been home to cattle and farming since before European settlement. The first post office opened in 1872. In 1925, the community merged with nearby Argyle to form Cleburne-Argyle. The first oil well in Cleburne was drilled by John Denton in 1902 and production began soon thereafter. By 1912, Cleburne had two sawmills and four grist mills producing lumber and flour for local markets as well as making oil products from bitumen recovered from wells near present-day Interstate Highway 10 between Argyle and junction with Interstate 30 east of town (now I-30 Business Loop). A hotel was built in 1915 on what is now First Street NW which served as the headquarters for the local oil company until it went bankrupt in 1923; however, this building still stands today as a resident hall used by school District One students grades 7 through 12 during lunchtime. In 1926, when Brazos River Pass Hydroelectricity Project was completed adjacent to townsite along Brazos River (acquired by Midwestern Electric Power Company), residents of Cleburne petitioned city officials to rename their municipality after hydroelectric engineer George Washington Carver who had provided assistance with engineering work on that project while living in Fort Worth at the time. On November 5, 1927, following special election results showing Carver's name prominent among namesakes option presented to voters (the others being Waco Dam Park and Southlake),Cleburne became "Carver City" or "Carverstown". In 1955, Citizens' Committee on Planning & Development submitted a plan for creation of an incorporated village within town limits called "Cleburnee Village". At that time there were no streets or boundaries set forth within the proposed village so citizens voted not to incorporate but proceeded with plans nonetheless under new leadership including incorporation intotown on December 15th . Again referendum proceedings failed but this time citizens successfully lobbied state lawmakers who granted incorporation into Arlington County effective January 1st 1956 which created then largest incorporated area west of Austin – just outside of Dallas/Fort Worth boundary – giving Cleburne Village its own government headed by a mayor and 8 trustees instead of just one elected by residents . Today continuation of efforts to create incorporated village within town limits continue with various incarnations such as "Clevenger Township", etc., all attempts failing thus far ; however annexation into ArlingtonCounty does provide some much needed breathing space for currently struggling town . With rich history dating back over 100 years plus ample natural resources available right hereabouts should anyone be interested or able to make some serious progress please don't be discouraged .. simply let us know!

Cleburne, Texas is a town located in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1872 by American settlers who were seeking to escape the political and social unrest of Independence and Kansas City. The name of the town comes from John Cleburne, an early settler. Cleburne replaced Carthage as the capital of Baylor County in 1875 after that county's creation from parts of Houston and Vernon Counties. In 1903 it became the capital of Vernon County when all but one seat on its first Board of Commissioners were eliminated by reorganization within the new county government. The original courthouse building burned down in 1907; a new courthouse was completed in 1911 and renamed for James Hogg (1851-1925), a local banker and politician who had been instrumental in creating Baylor University and other civic institutions near Cleburne. The old Courthouse Annex also served as a jail until 1958.
