Cleburne is a town in Texoma County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Cleburne was James B. Cleburne, who arrived there in 1859 and claimed land on the east side of the Rio Grande. He named his community after himself and deposited a dollar bill at each post office to serve as its currency. In 1870,Cleburne had a population of 100 people when it became the county seat for Texoma County from McKinney. The name "Cleburne" was derived from Spanish word "calabozo," meaning "stone quarry." In 1881, settlers started arriveng from McLennan County which was directly across the river from Texoma County. By 1890, there were 1100 residents in Cleburne with more coming every year until 1925 when school consolidation led to an all-time low of 451 residents in 1915 (the lowest number since 1880). The decline continued until 1939 when it reached its present level with 2,715 residents The first African American resident in Cleburne was Julius Thomas who arrived there on October 3rd 1892 On July 16th 1907 two men by the name of Wylie and Dixon were indicted for counterfeiting $5 U S notes issued by President Theodore Roosevelt They pleaded guilty and received three years probation but their crime still remains unsolved today On December 9th 1912 two negro women by the name of Fannie Keyes and Alice Keyes were arrested for vagrancy after being seen near Lubbock General Store . Mrs Keyes was released uncharged but Alice Keyes went to jail where she died during transportation back home
Cleburne is a city in and the county seat of Cleburne County, Texas, United States. The population was 875 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Fenton C. Cleburne in 1868 as a small town on the banks of the Brazos River. The name "Cleburne" comes from Creek Chief's village ("Cli-bawn"), located near present-day Cleburne City Hall. In 1868, Fenton C. Cleburne named his new settlement after General Winfield Scott's army officer and friend, Colonel Robert E. Lee, who had fought with him during the American Civil War (1861-1865). General Scott had asked Governor James Hogg to provide land for Colored men in southeast Texas, and when Hogg refused, Colonel Lee offered to donate land east of San Antonio for a black community led by African Americans if Hogg would allow them to vote white citizens could not attend public meetings or hold office within the municipality. In 1872, Captains John Dillard and James Aiken cofounded what is now known as Anglo-American Tobacco Corporation with their families on land donated by Colonel Lee. Aiken later served as mayor of Cleburne from 1904 until his death in 1928; he was also an early booster of civic affairs there and helped develop downtown into one of America's most important commercial centers during its early years. In 1915 Captain Jameson Kilpatrick organized a barbershop quartet which entertained troops stationed at Fort Sam Houston while they were building the Presidio Courthouse; this event is often cited as being one of the first steps in developing downtown into what it has become today. In 1924 Captain John Waddell became mayor after serving two terms as captain of police; he is generally held responsible for helping make downtown more secure during that time period following several prior attacks on residents including one which resulted in four people dead and dozens injured nationally both before and after World War II . Waddell also oversaw construction along Loop 610 south from downtown into what became known as “the business district” – an area which still retains some attributes associated with that period today such as high-end storesites lining Elm Street between Main Street and IH 40W/IH 35W.. He remains notable for his role in developing some much needed infrastructure such as funding for major expansions at Municipal Stadium (now AT&T Stadium) – home field of Dallas Cowboys football games since 1923 – during a time when stadium construction wasn't popular among local governments statewide because it seemed like every other project should take precedence over services like water mains etc., something that Waddell successfully lobbied against throughout his term despite strong opposition from developers & politicians alike
