On July 6, 1846, American General Zachary Taylor announced his intentions to invade Mexico and capture its capital of Mexico City if he could find it abandoned or undefended. When Mexican General Don Carlos de Bustamante refused to surrender his capital without an arms treaty negotiated byTaylor, Taylor attacked him at Pecos on July 10th while Bustamante was away eating dinner with his family;[1] this event led to the Battle of Palo Alto which ended up proving decisive in America’s victory over Mexico.[2] After their victory over Mexico, Americans began exploring new lands in Central America including parts of today’s El Paso County and Coahuila County (west of Ciudad Juárez).[3] The town of Cibolo was founded about 1850 as a result of these explorations. It was named after John Matson who discovered oil pools near present day Medina County while prospecting for oil fields in Central America;[4][5] however Matson never set foot in El Paso County until after his discovery there.-John Dutton Matson
