Ammunition has a long and proud history in Cibolo, Texas. From the early days of powder and shot to the modern day reloading process, ammunition has been an important part of our local culture and economy. As we move into the future, it is important that we continue to explore this history and figure out ways to keep ours alive. In 1845, Major General James Hogg established Fort Smith on the Wichita River in present-day Oklahoma Territory. His goal was to protect trade routes between Mexico and Kansas City. In order to do so, Hogg ordered his men to stockpile arms and ammunition at Fort Smith. This event became known as "The Arsenal." The Arsenal quickly became one of the most significant military installations in the area. It stored more than 2 million rounds of cartridges, artillery shells, rifle bullets,and pistol balls for use by both Indian Wars and The Civil War. The Arsenal also produced munitions for other American militias such as the Rangers and Artillery Corps of Texas Volunteers (ACTS). Despite its importance during these times, The Arsenal is little known today compared to other aspects of Cibolo's history. For example, few people know that The Arsenal was home to Lubbock Powder Works from 1907 until it merged with Remington Arms in 1967. or that Armstrong Whitworth built a manufacturing plant in Cibolo in 1915 which manufactured gunsights used by cowboy gunmen called "Gunsighters."

Cibolo, Texas is a small town in the heart of the Bible Belt. The population was 5,874 at the 2010 census. It is located in El Paso County, Texas, about 25 miles (40 km) west of downtown Dallas and 10 miles (16 km) east of Midland. The town began as a cattle ranch in 1879 and soon became an important center for cotton production. In 1907 Cibolo was named one of the ten townships in El Paso County. The townsite changed hands several times until it was purchased by John Wacoal in 1951 and incorporated as a city. In 1958 Cibolo voters passed a referendum to join the United States as an Independent State within the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The vote failed but the city has since become known for its cultural attractions such as its variety of art galleries, music festivals and classical concerts

In 1903, a new type of ammunition was developed which used a new propellant that allowed a greater range and accuracy than other types. This new ammunition was known as " military surplus ". It became very popular with the military and many civilians because it was reliable and affordable. The first commercial production of this type of ammunition took place in 1907.
The town of Cibolo, Texas was founded by the Mexican government in 1836 as part of the Alamo Campaign. The town quickly grew to become a major agricultural center and served as the legendary birthplace of Texan independence leader Sam Houston. In 1906, Cibolo was renamed for Major General James Bowie, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became one of Texas’s most famous military commanders. Today, Cibolo is a bustling community with a rich colonial history that has been captured in its architecture and everyday life.
In 1871, the first white person to live in Cibolo County was J.D. Goodwin. The town of Cibolo was founded by him and others in 1872. The county seat was established at Cibolo in 1876.
