A group of men including Jens Jensen (1824-1909) organized a wagon train to follow these herds and discovered what would become known as the Chico trail on July 12, 1846 near present day Cibolo Creek Bridge; they named their discovery Rancho del Apache after José Antonio Armijo y Muñoz who owned part of this tract of land along with other tracts adjoining it which became part of East Texas following Mexico's declaration of independence from Spain on February 2, 1896. This event helped spur settlement around Cibolo Creek due to its accessibility as well as an abundant supply of water not only for ranching but also for future towns that would be founded along this route such as Amarillo and Mexia; these settlements would eventually coalesce around what is now downtown Cibolo where Frenchman's Store still stands today

On November 12, 1850, Texas Rangers killed John Sowell on horseback in what is now Hill Country near downtown Cibolo.
