Cedar Park is one of the oldest cities in Texas and has been around since 1869. The city was named after Cedar Creek, which flows through it. The first settlers to Cedar Park were farmers who arrived from Missouri in 1869. In 1870, they built a log cabin on the banks of the creek that became known as Cedar Park. By 1874, there were fifty residents living in Cedar Park. That year, the town bought land from James Ahern for $1 per acre. In 1875, local citizens voted to name their new town after John Fenton Clarke, an American Revolutionary War general and congressman from Kentucky who served in Congress during the mid-19th century. The townspeople built a courthouse and Post Office at what is now mile marker 5 on I-35W just west of Interstate 635 between Elm and Oak Streets. They also constructed a schoolhouse and other buildings used by locals until 1915 when they moved to their current location on Elm Street just east of I-635 between Second Street and Third Street. In 1915, Cedar Park had 375 residents; by 1920 it had 1,000 residents and by 1930 it had 2,500 residents. During World War II (1939–1945), large numbers of military personnel stationed in Dallas – including many Americans who became fluent in Japanese – lived or worked near Cedar Park; some even purchased homes there while stationed overseas .
