It lies on the edge of the Houston metropolitan area and is home to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Cedar Park has been an agricultural community since its founding in 1881. The cotton industry declined after World War II but has resurgent in recent years with new manufacturing and agriculture businesses opening up. The townsite was named for Cedar Creek which flows through it. A post office was established at Cedar Park on November 12, 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on March 14, 1907. The first settler in what is now Cedar Park was James Hargrave who bought land from J.B. Smith near present-day FM 1960 and donated it to the town site as part of a gift scheme authorized by President George Washington Carver on October 16, 1887. Hargrave's donation included a house and farmstead now known as Mount Pleasant Baptist Church; these were later developed into what are today the neighborhoods of Old Town (north), Springtown (southwest), and Greenacres (northeast). In 1897–98 when Cypress Hill Elementary School opened in Springtown there were only six students; by 1923 there were over 100 residents attending school there! The second wave of settlers came during World War I when Refinery City munitions plant went online in nearby Midland; this brought about a significant increase in traffic along US 69 which crossed through Cedar Park en route to Midland from Houston During World War II much of what is now downtown Houston was destroyed due to bombing raids; however many homes still remain undamaged within walking distance of Pearl Street between Main Street/US 59 east and US 281 west which runs through Cedarpark today During Vietnam era some local businesses did take advantage of the fact that military personnel stationed here didn't have their full income tax withheld - most notably KFC which enjoyed immunity from taxes north of Mason Dixon line because it wasn't engaged in any combat operations
