Cedar Park, Texas is a small town located in the metropolitan area of Austin, Texas. The population was 5,849 at the 2010 census. Cedar Park is one of four towns that make up Austin's inner-ring suburb of Round Rock. It is adjacent to the University of Texas at Austin and Travis County Sheriff's Department headquarters. The town was founded in 1879 by James Kenedy and his family as a farmstead on land purchased from the Comanche Nation. The first settler in Cedar Park was John Smeaton who arrived in 1881. By 1886, all of Cedar Park had been surveyed and platted as a township under the name of "Round Rock Township". The Cedar Park post office opened in 1898. In 1907, it became part of the new city of Austin when it was annexed into the city limits. The town lost its post office status in 1951 but regained it after annexing Round Rock into Austin again in 1957. Cedar Park experienced significant growth during World War II due to military activity here including Boeing aircraft production facilities for North American Aviation and other companies found throughout southeastern Travis County; also military airfields such as Camp Kilmer (now Kilmer Air Force Base) which housed B-29 Superfortresses during takeoff and landing operations; White Sands Missile Range; and other underground missile test sites around town which were used until 1974 when they were closed because they were no longer necessary following enactment of anti-missile legislation known as LBJ Amendment No 2 (the "Space Race"). A large number Of residents came to work at these plants directly or indirectly for years afterwards their occupations reflection those nearby industry jobs - many still hold down day jobs today despite living miles away from any major airport! In recent years, much development has taken place within downtown Cedar Park itself with several high rise buildings erected since then including: First Baptist Church ( remodeled ); Second Baptist Church ; Methodist Episcopal Church ; Lutheran Cathedral ; Presbyterian church . These additions have helped renovate what had been an easily dilapidated downtown core into something more resembling contemporaryurbansized America than what existed prior to them - making Cedar park one thriving community rather than simply another agricultural stop on this increasingly suburban journey!
