Cedar Park is a small town in west Texas, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. Cedar Park is located in Hudspeth County, about 12 miles (19 km) east of Edinburg and about 18 miles (29 km) south of Fort Worth. The first people to arrive in what is now Cedar Park were the Comanche Indians. John Hays settled there in 1835. He built a gristmill on the Brazos River which he named Cedar Creek after his mother's family name. In 1846, Hays' grandson, George Washington Hays, bought 1,500 acres (500 ha) of land near present-day Cedar Park from Pecos Indian chief Manuel Ortiz for $5 per acre ($25 per sq mi). It was here that he started building what would become known as his "Homespun Ranch", comprising 400 acres (160 ha), or about one-third of the entire town site today. This ranch became one of the most important properties in Cedar Park because it offered easy access to water supplies and grazing land for cattle and horses. George Washingtons son James A. Hays sold part of this ranch to Julius Rosenwald in 1916 for $10 per acre ($30 per sq mi). From then until 1978, this property was divided among several families who lived on it: The ROSENWALD FAMILY OWNED ABOUT 60% OF THE AREA; THE LEWIS FAMILY OWNED ABOUT 30% OF THE AREA; THEN THERE WAS THE GORDON FAMILY OWNED ABOUT 10% OF THE AREA... ALL IN ALL IT WAS UNLIMITEDLY MANAGED BY SEVEN FAMILIES FROM 1938 TO 1978.[1] In 1928, Harry Emerson Fenton donated land to build a high school within the limits of what would eventually become Cedar Park proper. South Texas Junior College opened its doors on September 14th, 1929 with 16 students from Amarillo and 15 students from San Antonio attending classes at Box Elder Hall before moving into their new home on Milam Road on October 3rd following a grand opening ceremony by Mayor Dolph Briscoe with President Herbert Hoover serving as guest speaker.[2] On December 12th 1941—the day after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor—the school closed due to World War II military commitments but reopened two weeks later when Japanese forces had withdrawn from Hawaii[3] In 1951–1957 School District #2 closed all schools due to budget cuts making way for South Central High School which opened its doors September 9th 1957 with an enrollment of 350 students[4]. The original main building still stands today as does many other buildings downtown including Administration Building/ administrations office suite along with Science Lab Wing & Library Wing both originally built during School District 2 years ago![5][6][7][8][9] During these years much progress was made not just inside but also outside campus as well including groundbreaking for Athletic Fields Drive Soccer Field kids’ play area & more! When I looked back thru old photos I could see so many things have changed but some things haven’t changed at all like our Main Street where you can still buy groceries or gasoline etc... Our Community has always been supportive even if we don’t always agree! [10]
