Cedar Park, Texas is a small town located in Austin County, Texas. The population of Cedar Park was 19,813 at the 2010 census. Cedar Park is home to the University of Texas at Austin and the Cedar Park Mall. Cedar Park also has a baseball team, the Cedar Park Rangers, which played its first game in 1895. The area that now makes up Cedar Park was first settled by Native Americans about two hundred years ago. The area that would become Cedar Park was burned down by Spanish forces in 1836 as part of their conquest of Texas. In 1865, General Sam Houston named the land around what is now Cedarpark after his friend and mentor Major General John Buford Caldwell. The community grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location on a key trade route between Austin and Dallas. In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Cedarpark while on his tour of southern United States. Roosevelt was impressed with the community's Progressivism and offered financial assistance to help it grow into an prosperous town. By 1912, the population had increased to over 10,000 people and development began on what would be known as North Main Street. North Main Street became home to most of downtown's businesses until it bifurcated into East Main and West Main Streets in 1969 when South Main Street became home to Central High School (now UTAustin). In 1925, voters passed a resolution calling for annexation by Dallas because of its rich oil resources (Cedar park had no oil wells). On July 1st 1927 however annexation went through without any controversy or local protest from residents who were quick to build new homes in anticipation of growth opportunities within their newly annexed territory! Today, every family member from adjacent neighborhoods enjoys access to all that downtown has to offer; shopping malls like Carbondale’s Pyramid Shopping Center have replaced much-needed factories throughout this once rural area! In 1951 the population was reduced to 10,000 when Beaumont annexed Cedar Park. A new highway was built through the town, which caused much growth in traffic and development along Elm Street. This period also saw the introduction of cars into Cedar Park – for the first time people could drive around without having to take public transportation. In 1998 Cedar Park experienced another change when it merged with nearby Midland to form Midland-Cedar Park Combined Statistical Area (CSA). At this point there were over 150K residents living in both towns combined – making this one of Texas' largest metropolitan areas. Today, Midland-Cedarpark is still one of North Texas' most populous cities – with over 260K residents living within its borders!
