In 1951 Major General John Fetterman established Camp Kilmer Army Airbase nearby to provide facilities for Texas A&M University students studying aerial bombing techniques during World War II; this ended up being major USAAF facility within TXMA boundaries through 1990s continuing into 21st century era including reopened inactive AF Benson today adjacent to IH-35W SBP interchange just south of CDP limits). In 1957 saw opening at nearby Green Valley Lake park – home also now to Beltline Boulevard retail mall – then White Sands Missile Range 3 miles SW along IH-35E SBP interchange serving USAF ICBM operations until shutdown early 2000s concurrent with Redstone Arsenal National Security Complex 10 miles NW near TXMA boundary closing that year concurrent with Green Valley Lake park closing reducing Army Bases complex size from 9 acres (3 ha) earlier to 4 acre (2 ha) final size plus associated housing developments controls still extant today throughout Allentown MSA although non-military use has greatly reduced or eliminated since late2000s despite various attempts by community groups attempting variously leased land back/reopening AFB etc.) . All told more than 60 years elapsed between first recorded settler activity and establishment of current municipality!
