Caldwell founded Cedar Park Land Co., a land company that bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land east of town from John Wesley Hardin for $10 per acre (4 ha). The company developed it into what today is Cedar Park with a variety of businesses including lumberyards, flour mills, cattle ranches, banks and insurance companies until it merged with United States Steel Corporation in 1967 to form US Steel Corporation/Cedarpark Incorporated. Cedar Park is a small town in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, located just northeast of downtown Dallas. The population was 21,917 at the 2010 census. Cedar Park had been an agricultural center since it was founded in 1875, and its economy shifted to Manufacturing after World War II. In recent years, Cedar Park has become a popular tourist destination for people who love spending time outdoors and exploring its natural surroundings. The history of Cedar Park can be traced back to 1875 when pioneers John Wesley Powell and Jim Bridger traveled through the area on their way to prospect for oil in Texas. They named the region Cedar Creek after one of the creeks that ran through it. The first farmers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and they started growing corn, wheat, cotton, and other crops. By 1830, there were over 100 acres of farmland within present-day Cedar Park. In 1881, General James Ewing purchased 10 miles (16 km) of prairie between what are now Elmhurst Road and Cottonwood Road from Jesse Grimes for $1 per acre ($26 per km). This land became known as Ewing Prairie because it was used by cattle ranchers for grazing purposes only. After purchase, Ewing began developing his property into what is now Cedar Park by building roads and draining swamps that surrounded his land. He also built a mill on his property which supplied flour to local mills throughout central Texas until 1915. Cedar Park's first post office was established in 1887; it remained open until 1954. At that time, mail delivery ceased due to increased competition from Austin Post Office Department facilities south of Dallas limits during World War II. The community's first church was organized on November 17th of that year by Methodist minister Wm Flemming with assistance from Reverend Simeon Bourgeois from nearby Fort Worth’s First Baptist Church under the name North First Methodist Episcopal Church Incorporated (now Maple Lawn United Methodist Church). The agricultural sector continued to dominate development within Cedar Park until after World War II when manufacturing took hold as a result of new technology developments such as television production plants set up along I-10 east of Fort Worth during this time period (the industry would later expand westward into Arlington County). Over time various businesses have sprung up along Elmhurst Road including: Cintas Packing Company (now Hanes), J M Lumber & Hardware store(now Sears), Ford dealership(later Sam’s Club), Kwik Trip Pizza(later Papa John’s Pizza), ExxonMobil gas station/service station(later Texaco), Midway Bakery & Cafe(closed 2009), RV Parks America(closed 2006) – all which remain active today despite being vacated or converted into residential areas or commercial uses according to their current owners/.
