Cedar Hill is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Cedar Hill is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore and settle in what is now Cedar Hill were either traders or fur trappers who traveled through this area in search of new land to trade with or hunt. In 1836, John Wesley Moody, Sr., founded Moody Bible Institute in Cedar Hill after traveling through this region on his way from Illinois to preach (and establish moral precepts). The Institute soon became one of the largest religious institutions in Texas and remains so today. In 1839, General Sam Houston elected President James Kenedy as governor of Texas and moved his army eastward into what is now Wichita County (now Hidalgo County), Kansas Territory for an expedition against Mexican forces under Francisco Villa that failed catastrophically due to lack of supplies and terrain advantage; Villa retreated back into Mexico City with many ill-effects for Houston's successful military campaign which ended years later when Mexican independence was recognized by Great Britain as a result of its war with Mexico essentially ending that conflict. Cedar Hill is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Cedar Hill began as a post office on May 10, 1881, and became a city on February 14, 1907. Cedar Hill was originally named "Hillsboro" after Confederate General John B. Hill. The first settlers in what would become Cedar Hill were Civil War veterans who had been discharged from the army and decided to start anew life in this new land. They arrived by wagon train from Louisiana on April 9th, 1881. They were met with hostility by the locals because they were foreigners and not like their own citizens of Hudspeth County who had been born and raised hereabouts. Nonetheless, these veterans built up a strong community that soon numbered over 100 people including many women and children working day and night to improve life for themselves and their families. The first school in Cedar Hill was built on the site of what is now higgins park which was donated by Judge James Guthrie . The first teacher was Mrs Fenton who taught 3rd grade until 1886 when she moved up to 7th grade due to lack of space at the original school building which only could accommodate 2-3 students each class during those days! In 1892 a large addition was made to the old school house providing classrooms/hall/office/gym/play ground for additional students as well as ancilliary spaces such as storage sheds etc…..This huge addition remains today as one of the iconic features of downtown Cedar Hill! In 1907 Cedar Hill became one of 4 cities within Austin through annexation - another blackamerican success story during this time period! From then until 1916 there wasn’t any major construction or development taking place within Cedarhill other than occasional home repairs or alterations done by local residents & businesses! This also included some great white boys like Donelson Stephens (Who later founded HOUSTON TX) & Clyde Ewing (founder Dallas Cowboys) coming into our town & starting businesses locally too…….. So much has happened since then (& we continue growing!) that it’s hard to keep track but some highlights include: Additions made to Higgin Park in 2001; The creation of Downtown Central Square in 2013; A new library opened inside City Hall late last year……….So long CedarHill Community – we love you all still!
