Cedar Hill was founded in 1887 by John and Anna Mayhew. The town's first post office opened in 1889, and it grew rapidly thanks to its location on the banks of the Chickasaw River. By 1912, Cedar Hill had become an incorporated municipality with a own police department and fire hall. In 1928, Cedar Hill became one of the original ten towns located within Wichita Falls Municipal limits when that city was created from parts of Johnson and Tyler counties. In 1960, Cedar Hill voters passed a resolution urging the Houston Oilers to move their football stadium from Houston to Cedar Hill so that it could be used for civic events such as parades and baseball games between the two cities. The Oilers didn't follow through on their promise, but they did help create Cedar Hill's reputation as one of Wichita Falls' most popular tourist destinations due to its abundance of natural beauty (including beautiful waterfalls) as well as its historical significance dating back to 1887. Today, CedarHill remains an affluent community with many operations inside its own municipal government including schools (four elementary schools and two high schools), parks/recreational areas (including Legends Park which contains a 20-acre lake), a library (the only municipally supported public library in Johnson County), several businesses including several garment factories during World War II,[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]and other industry over time have left their mark on local life while also impacting both social services provided by county government like trash collection or streetlights among others; all without neglecting aspects associated with typical American suburban lifestyles such as shopping malls outside neighboring Wichita Falls or Friday night live music at nearby venues like Mohawk Casino & Grill
Cedar Hill is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. Cedar Hill was founded by James A. Caldwell in 1858 as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Fort Worth and Arlington. In 1881, Cedar Hill became a town when it was annexed by Fort Worth. In 1912, Cedar Hill achieved city status when it passed an act to that effect by the Texas Legislature. The city Beautiful growth ensued with various businesses opening up within its boundaries including a post office, bakery and grocery store; gas stations; movie theaters; and hotels like the Masonic Temple (now called the Marriott). The decline of Cedar Hill began in the 1970s with falling oil prices and other economic problems throughout Tarrant County which led to joblessness among local residents and an exodus of young people to bigger cities such as Dallas or Houston. However, recent efforts by city officials have helped revive some aspects of life in Cedar Hill through revitalization projects like art galleries, restaurants and more than one hundred homes being built for low-income families since 2007.
