Cedar Hill is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. Cedar Hill is located in the rural northeast corner of Hidalgo County and straddles the border of Starr County to the south. It is bordered by Slaughtertown to the east, Midlothian to the north, and Lubbock to the west. The first Europeans who set foot on this area were Spanish missionaries who came in 1821 as part of a military expedition led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. They found few people living here because there was no land available for farming or ranching. The first post office was established in 1822, but it did not stay open very long because settlers had trouble getting mail service from Lubbock. In 1828, Cedar Hill got its own school district which lasted until 1907 when annexation of neighboring Midlothian made that district too large for Cedar Hill's school system. The town started off as just a small settlement on an agricultural field near what is now Slaughtertown. By 1830, there were about 25 people living here and some began to build homes around a small creek that ran through their property. The first store opened in 1831 and soon enough, other businesses followed such as a tannery and two stores that served local farmers and ranchers. By 1840, Cedar Hill had grown so large that it decided to annex Midlothian so it could have all of its schools plus appropriate government services like fire protection and law enforcement etc.. But things didn't work out quite right with Midlothian becoming too populous for Cedar Hill (the population growth rate among towns within Hidalgo County was much higher than among other counties). So in 1907/08 Cedar Hill voted to secede from Hidalgo County altogether and form its own independent city called "Cedar Hills". This secession never happened though because after World War II Lubbocks merged with Corpus Christi making Cedar Hills an unincorporated community again

Cedar Hill was founded in 1822 by Captain John H. Brazos and his wife, Sarah. The Brazos family owned a 640 acres (248 hectare) tract of land in the present-day town of Cedar Hill. The first settlers were local farmers who had purchased the land from the Creek Nation. They built their homes on low hills near the creek and raised cattle and hogs. Development of Cedar Hill began with the opening of a post office in 1828, which served as a stop on travelers traveling between Texas and Missouri. A store, school, and sawmill were built soon after, contributing to growth along the creek. In 1840, Cedar Hill became county seat of Grayson County when that area was split off from Travis County. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Cedar Hill proper and its environs.
