Cedar Hill, Texas is a small town located in Potter County, Texas. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. Cedar Hill is one of the oldest towns in the county and has been around for over 100 years. The first settler in what is now Cedar Hill was John Denton. Denton built a cabin on Hwy 290 about 1851. In 1892, James Fenton opened a store in Cedar Hill and it became known as the focal point of the community. Fenton died in 1922, but his store continued to be open until 1951. Although Cedar Hill had a few retail businesses up until the late 1990s, its main industry has been agriculture since it was settled by Europeans during the 1800s. It is also home to Cedar Creek Ranch which was founded by Drury and later purchased by Donny Deaton Jr., who operated it until his death in 2003. Cedar Hill started out as simply a farmstead with only six residents. White settlement began soon after this area became part of Potter County because there were no other places available to settle due to lack of land or water resources. In 1851, John Denton built a cabin on Hwy 290 near present day Cedar Hills Elementary School; this initial location would become known as "The Farm". Over time however, this initial farmstead grew into an extended family-owned business with over 50 employees when James Fenton opened his store nearby about 1911-1922 (Fenton's Store still stands today). By 1940 there were just 10 residents living within sight of The Farm - but that number rapidly increased when new housing developments developed close by! By 1970 there were 216 people living within sight of The Farm - again an increase from 1980! This growth continued through most of the 21st century before slowing somewhat during recent years – though still significant given that even today there are more people living inside than outside Ofcúmment Drive! Although farming remains Cedar Hills' primary industry, some other key economic activities have included manufacturing and services throughout their history: textiles (until 1951 when jeans came ontothe scene), shoe repair/manufacturing (until 1978), general merchandise stores (1911-1978), ranchers selling hay and calves (1948-present), coffee roasters/bakery (1981-present) & more recently medical equipment such as ultrasound machines & MRI scanners! Today's economy largely revolves around ranching which continues to be an important facet of local society; both owning and operating ranches provides stability for families while providing opportunities for many jobs including cowboys / cowgirl work onangeles ranches; crop production on drylands across much rural Texas; sheep herding on flocks scattered throughout North Central Texas (& New Mexico); oil exploration off shore along Coastal Red River Valley.; dairy cattle operations across SW TX bordering Oklahoma City; blacksmithing (& more)on properties scattered throughout rural areas alluvial plains………..
Cedar Hill was first settled in 1836 by the Llano Estacado tribe. The town was named for Cedar Creek which flowed through the area. In 1876, Cedar Hill became a census-designated place.
