Cedar Hill, Texas is a small town in Harrison County, Texas. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It lies on the edge of Cedar Hill Lake and about 20 minutes north of downtown Dallas. The first gunshots were heard in Cedar Hill on October 10th 1892 when two farmers, John Ladd and his son James Ladd were shot by cattle rustler George Prentice while they were grazing their horses near the lake. On December 12th 1892, brothers Jesse and John Hightower killed Prentice with a rifle after he had followed them to the lakeshore to steal somealoose from them. In 1897, Harvey Hodges killed three men who had been pursuing him on horseback near Cedar Hill. In 1903, Johnnie Boyd shot and killed two Ranger officers during a raid on outlaw activity in Cedar Hill. At that time rifle rounds could only be fired at 25 yards because of concerns over accuracy with handguns then being new technology. From 1907 until 1943 there was only one newspaper in Cedar Hill; The Daily News which was published every day except Sundays until it closed down due to low circulation in 1944. On May 14th 1904 Robert Epps opened fire on a group of five men he found loafing along the side of I-35W just south of Maplewood Cemetery killing three and wounding four before finally turning himself into police custody as he left the scene with an unconscious man aboard his car. Five days later Epps committed suicide by shooting himself inside his jail cell after learning that prison officials would not let him serve out his full sentence for murders committed outside Texas without first receiving death penalty notice from governor Doyle Brunson because Epps had already served 23 years for murder outside Texas). From 1908 until 1953 there was only one store open in CedarHill - The General Store which closed its doors permanently due to economic difficulties caused by World War II rationing restrictions placed upon Texan businesses by FDR's New Deal policies On November 15th 1951 nine people were hunting deer across from Highway 6 east of town when Darrell Sheppard fired six shots at them from an old white Bronco truck resulting in all nine casualties - five dead including Sheppard himself; three wounded (one fatally); and four children playing nearby who sustained no injuries although one child narrowly missed being hit by oneof Sheppard's bullets as it passed overheadadena neroad
