Carrollton is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 29,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County. Carrollton is part of the Brownsville–Seguin–Edinburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Carrollton was Wm. Fenton who came from England in 1836 and settled on a farm near present-day Slaughter Road and Bowie Street. By 1840, there were 10 families living in the area which included 4 farms and 12 houses. The first post office was established in 1843 with Wm. Fenton as its first occupant. The town started off as a small village with only 2 or 3 stores and no school until after 1850 when John Pemberton donated land to build a school which became known as Southwestern High School; today's Carrollton Municipal Airport was also founded in that year by Pemberton on land donated by him and his wife Sarah Jarrell Pemberton In 1870, James Aiken built the first store within present day Carrollton limits – Aiken & Son Store – on Bowie Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue North. In 1880, Alfred Soderlund opened his grocery store at 9th and Market Streets Northeast next to what would becomeSouthwestern High School (now Prairie View A&M University). This would be the start of one of Texas' largest grocery chains with over 100 stores across 5 states by 1890 In 1925, Standard Oil Company leased an entire block of land for $2 per acre adjacent to thenSouthwest High School becoming Southwestern Petroleum Company Limited;today's ChevronTexaco headquarters are located on this same block As oil production increased throughout Midland County during World War II, so too did demand for local goods produced by local companies such asSouthwestern Petroleum Company Limited (later ChevronTexaco) which employed over 20% of all Brownsville-Seguin-Edinburg's workforce during those years However following World War II petrochemical production began to decline nationally due to costs associated with war efforts while industrial growth continued throughout East Texas resulting in job losses for many local companies such asSouthwest Petroleum Company Limited ; these layoffs led to some 20% unemployment among locals during 1947 In 1951,standardized trade name Texaco changed its name back toStandard Oil Company effective September 15th that year representative from Texaco visited Southwest Elementary School Kindergarten class where they informed students that "the business side [of Standard] had been bought out by Exxon Mobil Corporation" thus ending their formal education program at that institution ; subsequent research has shown that this event actually occurred without any prior notice or notification whatsoever from either school officials thereby infringing upon academic rights . As Standard Oil company lay dormant for several decades it reverted back into private ownership but still uses its original marketing moniker Texaco today

The Battle of Monterrey on October 15, 1846, saw battle between American forces under General Zachary Taylor and Mexican troops led by Colonel Francisco Morelos. After days of fighting that resulted in over 50 dead and 300 wounded, Mexico ceded control of Veracruz to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As a result of this event, Texas became an American state on November 6th,1848. In 1870, Carrollton began to grow rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of two important trails: the Santa Fe Trail and Texas Road 21. By 1907, it had reached its current population size of approximately 25,000 people. At that time it also became one of the most rural towns in Texas with only a few downtown streets remaining unincorporated territory within its boundaries. In 1917 Carrollton hosted what is now known as World's Fair USA parade which drew more than three million spectators from all around America
