Canyon is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name Canyon comes from the Spanish word "canal," meaning "a small stream." The first settler in what is now Canyon was Wm. Hays in 1836. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Canyon and it had a post office and school. In 1871, settlers started to clear land for farming and soon there were barns and outbuildings built on the north side of the creek that flows through town. A Methodist church was also erected in this time period. In 1886, when railroad construction began through Williamson County, entrepreneurs James Bowie and John Craddock bought 640 acres (253 hectares) of land east of town to create an agricultural district known as Bowie Ranch. With this purchase they laid out a townsite that included buildings such as a courthouse square (now renamed EastGate Mall), schools (including one named after their father - James Bowie High School), churches (Congregationalist/Methodist/Catholic), stores (Boot Hill Store served as both a grocery store and general store until 1923), cotton plantations (the first cotton plantation located within present-day Canyon was located on State Highway 183 about 5 miles west of town), Weaver's Millinery shop (founded by Barbara Weaver in 1892), and two wells drilled into hills overlooking town for irrigation purposes. The first post office opened in Canyon on February 14, 1889; it became inactive on October 11th due to high volumes of mail being sent through Austin instead at that time. The original building still stands today next to the east gate of Eastgate Mall off US 183 near Bowie Ranch Road
