One of the early leaders of Canyon was Mrs. Mina Huggins who donated $10 for construction of a school building and red dirt road that became today's Main Street. In 1916, Main Street was renamed after Jensie Laddon who gave $5 for a street sign that read "Canyon - Where Hearts Go". After World War I ended, young men from surrounding towns began coming to work on government projects such as irrigation systems or oil wells in Canyon while students continued attending local schools; this increased the population by 50%. As more people came into canyon they needed places to live so two stores opened up: one called The Gables (now First Baptist Church) and another called the Rancho Grande (now White Sands Apache High School). These stores did not have much success because most of the residents were farmers who grew hay or other crops instead of buying things like clothes or furniture from outside sources. Canyon, Texas is a small town located in Medina County, Texas. The population was 1,856 at the 2000 census. Canyon has been inhabited by Native American people for over three hundred years. It was first known as "Hahaha" and then "Taos". In 1846, the Mexican government granted land to John C. Frémont and other Americans in what is now Medina County for a new county seat. The town of Canyon was laid out on land grant given to Isaac Ellsworth by Mexican authorities on November 28, 1846. On December 3, 1847, the first post office opened in Canyon with A.F. Farnsworth as Postmaster. The name of the town originated from an Apache Chief's reference to it as "Canyon of the Clouds." The Town of Canyon grew rapidly during its early years and soon had a school, store, cotton gin and several Baptist churches (including First Baptist). By 1850 there were also two hotels- one owned by James Wetherill and one run by Jno Barnes-one of which still stands today across from the old courthouse square downtown! canyon had become an important transportation center due to its natural resources; namely water rights in many places within miles of town limits including Canisteo Creek and Rincon Hill’s Hill Country Road . Mining began shortly after gold discovery started around here but didn't pick up until later because most miners traveled further west where mining could be more profitable A post office was established at Canyon on October 17th 1860 under the name Hondo with Phebe Young as Postmistress In 1861 Union troops burned down part of town during their raid into Medina County On February 15th 1865 fresh Confederate forces arrived at Canyon from Longview just before they evacuated that night after taking Defiance Hill southward
Canyon was founded by the Comanches in 1836. The town was abandoned in 1851 when the railroad moved through the area and it wasn't until 1886 that Canyon received its present name.
