Canyon, Texas is a city in Chisago County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The name Canyon comes from the Santa Fe Trail which passed through its territory in 1849 and 1850. Canyon started as a small community called "Moses" on the east bank of White River just south of present-day Canyon Lake. In 1885, settlers moved to Canyon from nearby Riceville and renamed it for their new home town on the Santa Fe Trail: "Canyon," after the canyon located near by in New Mexico Territory where they had resided before moving westward into Dakota Territory. In 1907, when Minneapolis and St. Paul were incorporated as cities, Canyon became one of their original wards with a population of about 100 citizens; however, by 1914 it numbered only 50 residents due to an increase in agriculture and industry away from downtown during World War I; also causing much joblessness among local workers because no rail service then existed to bring goods into or out of town. As a result of this situation, development within the canyon began slowly but surely almost exclusively within its boundaries until well after World War II when various businesses relocated outside city limits onto newer developments that suddenly became available due to Interstate 94's construction; finally culminating with comprehensive redevelopment efforts initiated by Mayor Norm Coleman beginning in earnest around 1980 which saw most all local businesses replaced by chain stores along with significant loss of residential property values as well as numerous storefront conversions/demolition throughout downtown; resulting (alongside modest resurgence since 2000) today in what has come to be known as Downtown Canyon City although still primarily characterized by its agricultural setting typified by irrigated farmland stretching eastward towards Interstate 94
