A post office called Canyon was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. The town's first Store and Hotel were built around 1886. Kansas City merchant Wm Henson opened a store there in 1896. By 1913, the population of Canyon had grown to over 1000 people and included a Methodist church and several small businesses. In 1916, canyon supported its first rodeo event when 160 men from 25 counties participated in the Lone Star Classic Rodeo Festival at nearby San Antonio Park. In 1924, oil began flowing through the Colorado River near Canyon and soon industry followed; construction of pipelines led to an increase in traffic through the community center which became known as "the Pipeline Capital of Texas." By 1941, about half of all employed residents worked for oil companies located upstream or downriver from canyon; some 7500 workers used local roads to transportation crude oil across country. However, with World War II came an end to production along with other aspects of ranching life; by 1946 only 10% of workforce still lived within commuting distance for jobs outside canyon walls In 1954, President Dwight D Eisenhower designated Canyon as one of five towns near San Antonio that would be developed for housing during his Marshall Plan program which aimed to revive Europe after years of economic decline caused by British colonialism.
