The history of expandable mountains in Canyon, Texas goes back to the early 1800s. The first642 feet (183 meters) high Joshua tree peak was climbed by prospectors in 1872. The peak, which is now part of the park, remained a source of pride for ranchers and farmers until the late 1800s when it was destroyed by a fire. In 1907, Congress passed the Forest Service Organic Act which designated Joshua trees as national monuments. This led to increased visitation and research on themountainand its resources. As a result, in 1929, an 8-foot deep hole was drilled intothepeaktoinstallaradio antenna for use by scientists conducting fieldwork onthemountain.
Canyon, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, about 20 miles north of Austin. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Canyon is named after John Wesley Powell and his party who explored the Rocky Mountains in 1869. The first permanent settler in Canyon was James Hance who arrived in 1874. He built a cabin on the west side of the creek that flows through the town today. In 1886, Hance's son-in-law, Smedley Butler moved to Canyon from Wichita Falls, TX and started a grocery store there which remains open today as Smedley Butler's Rex Mart

Canyon, Texas is a town in Sherman County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Canyon was founded in 1869 by Texans James Boggs and John Clements as a trading post on the Canadian River. In 1876, it became the county seat of Sherman County and was renamed after Canyon Creek in honor of General George Armstrong Custer. In 1907, Canyon's first school opened to serve the community's children. A new courthouse was built in 1912 and named for Judge Ladd Tilton Caldwell of Henderson County who donated land for the building. The first junior high school opened in 1923 and became one of the largest high schools in Dallas–Fort Worth when it merged with two other schools to form North Side High School in 1940. In 1959, Canyon voters passed an amendment to their municipal charter creating a city government with its own police department and budgeting abilities which would later be adopted by neighboring Round Rock as well. When Carson Air Force Base opened in 1987 it affected local residents directly with its huge addition to their budgets that required demolition of many homes within town limits without any public opposition or compensation from those homeowners - this event is known locally as "The Rancho de las Americas". In 2000, Republican Rick Perry won the election against Democrat Ann Richards (the first woman to serve as Governor of Texas) making him governor and promoting Canyon into a major tourist destination while also reversing many policies enacted during Ann Richards' time as Governor such as repealing annexation laws that had been put into place during her predecessor Perot's administration which had caused much anger and resentment among some longtime residents who felt they were being ejected from their home base due to political correctness instead of economic development opportunities like those available within nearby Round Rock proper
