Canyon is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1876 by John H. Slaughter and his brother-in-law, James Fenton. The first post office was established in Canyon on September 15, 1876. As of the 2010 census, the population of Canyon was 914. The town of Canyon grew up around the ranching and cattle industry that dominated life in Hudspeth County for many years until farming became more common as a result of improvements made to the area by farmers such as Harry Hays in the early 20th century. In 1902, Republic Oil Company drilled a well at Canyon and began production; this led to increased development in the area and new businesses were started including a grocery store, two banks (the First National Bank and the Peoples Bank), an hotel/motel, three schools (one high school and two middle schools), an auto dealership/repair shop, a garage/shop complex containing four cars including one that can be ridden on with seats removed (now used as storage space), numerous residences (most are still standing today) and several small businesses: a bakery, candy store, gas station/convenience store etc.; all these establishments remain extant today.
