By 1916, the town had swollen to 1,032 residents and it became an incorporated municipality in 1924. In 1950, local ranchers started selling cattle to farmers in neighboring Wichita Falls and Texas City; this caused a decline in production at the oil wells along with other economic problems for Canyon Village which eventually led to its incorporation into Midland County as an unincorporated community on July 1, 1974.

He and his family were pioneers who traveled west to find new land. After finding some good land near present-day Dallas, they started farming it and trading goods with other communities along the Trinity River system. In 1872, they opened their first store in what is today called Canyon. They continued to operate their business until 1915 when they sold their property to Cactus Land Company which ran it until 1971 when it became part of Hudspeth County government hands again as a tiny village called Pecos City
