Canyon, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,391 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded by Mormons in 1879. Canyon has a post office and an agricultural school that provides instruction to farmers. The first settlers in what would become Canyon were Englishmen who arrived on horseback from Missouri in 1879. By 1880 they had built a log cabin and began trading with Indians for goods they found near their farmstead. They also started to build homes which still stand today within the limits of the town limits. In 1886, Mormon missionaries named John Dolan and David Hockaday came to Canyon from Longview, Texas with news of new land grants available in Hudspeth County if they could settle it and develop it into a rancho (a Mexican land grant). They took up this offer and erected a log cabin on the edge of what would later become canyon. From this point forward there was continuous growth and development at Canyon as people built more houses, businesses, churches (the first being built by LDS missionaries), schools (one being organized by Brigham Young High School after he left America for his mission), roads, bridges and other infrastructure which continues to this day." In 1915 when World War I started there were only 300 residents living within the then tiny town limits but by 1918 there were 5000 residents living within its present boundaries including those inside what became canyon walls after statehood created local borders between Hudspeth County and Travis County. In 1930 when Mesa Verde National Park was established much of what now makes up canyon was annexed into Mesa Verde National Park so most everything east of US-190 became part of Mesa Verde National Park while all that west became part of Hudspeth County again until it gained its own county seat in 1960s when Canyon incorporated as an independent municipality

Canyon, Texas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,927 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The name Canyon comes from the creek that flows through it and its history can be traced back to 1834 when settlers named it "Canyon Creek". The first post office in Canyon was established in 1836. In 1860, the town changed its name to Hudspethville after James Denton Hudspeth, a Congressman from nearby Georgetown who served as Texas' second Territorial Governor during the Mexican-American War. As Texan towns grew larger and more numerous throughout this era, Canyon became an important center for commerce and agriculture. In 1915, canyon's railroad depot was destroyed by fire; however, within a few years another depot had been built on what is now Main Street. This new station continued serving as the county seat until 1959 when an addition to Canyon High School located on West First Street resulted in the decision of then-Hudspeth County Judge John Wickersham to move his office from Georgetown to Canyon so that he could better serve residents there. The old high school building still stands today as part of main street's heartland shopping district - one of only a handful remaining examples of early 20th century architecture in canyon. In recent decades much development has taken place around downtown - including the construction of new shopping malls and offices buildings as well as increased residential development along Main Street and other major thoroughfares surrounding downtown. However, much work remains needed before downtown can become significantly more vibrant than it presently appears - particularly with respect to improving public transportation options and increasing access to cultural attractions both inside and outside of downtown (e.g., art galleries). As one smallicksy response to growing trade ties between Mexico City and Houston – both cities are home to significant Mexican immigrant populations – officials have considered setting up business districts within each city's limits where Mexicans could open their own businesses without fear of retribution or violence from local gangs or criminalsaffiliated with those gangs. If approved by city councils across both cities would represent a very positive step forward for Mexico City's battered economy while also making life easier for millions of undocumented immigrants living in both municipalities who currently cannot easily pursue legal status or get employment because they do not meet certain eligibility requirements set forth by either city government agencies (e.g., drug testing).
