The population of Canyon increased rapidly during World War II because of the military base that was established here called Camp Bowie which housed thousands of servicemen from all over the US and Mexico. In 1951, a group of local farmers petitioned to have their land reclassified as Navajo Nation land after they had been living there for many years without any recognition from government officials. This request was denied but it did bring attention to Canyon's Native American history which has been largely ignored by most people who live here today. Today, there is a museum dedicated to the native culture located in town square which features exhibits about agriculture, art, mythology and more.

Canyon was named for John Caldwell, father of future rancher and congressman James Fenton Caldwell Jr., who served as a delegate to Congress from that district from 1907 to 1915. In 1902, railroad tracks were laid through the community by the Gulf, Texas Railway Company and it became an agricultural center with irrigation systems developed for cotton and other crops. A cement plant began operations in 1927; it continued to operate until 1991. In early 1969, three students at Baylor University organized a student-led campaign to get money set aside for a new high school in Canyon; they were successful and Canyon High School opened its doors that fall. The original building had been destroyed by fire two years earlier while it was being renovated inside campus boundaries; however, a new wing was completed and opened in 1972 which now houses both the high school’s gymnasium and auditorium as well as classrooms, music rehearsal space,and such administrative functions as scheduling buses for athletics games or hosting fund-raisers for student scholarships or support groups.). According to local legend, when Lyndon Johnson visited canyon during his 1965 visit he asked one of the students how things were going there – this story has been frequently told over time (eager parents often bring their children into town on visits) – so Johnston may have inspired then-US Rep Jason Chaffetz (R), who represented canyon from 2003 until his resignation last year after winning re-election there against Democrat Wendy Davis
