Canyon is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Canyon is located on the east side of the San Mateo River. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "Canyon" comes from a trail that led cattle and travelers to Indian Wells Creek in present day Kendall County, Arizona in 1849. The first white settler in Canyon was Wm. Fenton who built a cabin near present day Topock Road in 1859. In 1865, John Wesley Powell explored what would become Canyon and named it for his friend General Alonzo Elam canyon country west of Tucson, Arizona where he had been stationed as an Army officer during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1912 Charles Blythe bought 2,000 acres (810 ha) of land at foot of Lone Pine Mountains south of town from A.D Hare for $10 per acre ($4 million today). He developed this land into what is now known as Business Row subdivisions including Canyon Villas which still stand today with their extensive lawns and stone piers leading down to creek beds or swimming holes beneath them; these model homes were designed by noted architect Edward Larrabee & Sons.. Development began on a large damsite project called Blue Hole Dam which successfully held back the San Antonio River for over 50 years until it finally broke free and flooded much of downtown Austin in 1957 due to faulty construction - a disaster that killed more than 100 people and left millions homeless! Overlooked later were farmers’ markets started developing along Commerce Street between Lamar Boulevard and I-35W; there are now several dozen restaurants and cafes dotting this busy commercial corridor dating back to shortly after its establishment when Austin was still an agricultural center with only sparse development around it! Today canyon offers visitors many interesting attractions such as hiking trails through beautiful ponderosa pine forests bordered by rolling hills ; whitewater rafting down Clear Fork streams running through evergreen forest; beautiful rock formations including high cliffs overlooking canyons filled with rapids; numerous caves including one under Highway 183 just outside town limits; historical sites like Mesa Verde National Park located about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of town on Ulysses S Grant Blvd.;í ranchos comprising 640 acres (250 ha); golf courses sprinkled throughout various parts of TX administered by various organizations such as:Texas Rangers/Sheriffs Department/ Travis County Constable's Office etc.; tennis courts available at severalrian resort facilities across town...and much more

Canyon has been served by the United States Postal Service since 1872. The first white people to arrive in Canyon were cattle buyers from New Mexico Territory who established a post office here on May 1, 1872. The first mail delivery to Canyon took place on October 5, 1872 by George A Haggerty with package containing provisions for his own family and 11 others traveling down from Fort Worth via stagecoach. In 1907, when Hardin County was created out of Hudspeth County, Canyon became its county seat and remained so until 1959 when it was replaced by Round Rock as the new county seat because that city's population had surpassed that of canyon (7,948 at 2000). The construction of Loop 15W began in 1958 and completed in 1963; this connected I-10 east-west through downtown Austin with Loop 16N/A north-south which linked I-10 east-west with San Antonio de Tamaulipas
Canyon was founded in 1836 by David F. Hockaday and his partners, John D. Watt and Isaac Aspinwall. The town was named for the canyon that ran through it, which is now known as the Rio Grande. It was originally a small town of around 100 people, but it grew rapidly due to its location and the lucrative trade routes that passed through it. In 1841, Canyon became a county seat of Webb County, Texas. The area that today makes up Canyon has been part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area since 1974.
