Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Canyon, Texas. The first magazine to be published in the city was the "Canyon Rifle and Pistol Club"’s "The Rifleman" in 1911. The first gunsmith in town was Fenton Wilkinson who had his shop on Main Street. He started publishing Gun News in 1915. In 1916, Williamson Manufacturing Company opened up shop here and began producing rifle magazines. By 1922, they were printing 12-page issues of "The Rifleman." Then, starting in 1923, the paper became known as "The Shotgunner". It continued publication until 1986 when it changed its name to "Rifle & Pistol Review". In 1949, Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (Winchester) moved their plant from Dallas to Canyon. They began manufacturing shotgun magazines here and soon became one of the largest producers of firearms magazine products in Texas. In 1957, they produced their 100th issue of "The Shotgunner." That same year also saw the opening of Canyon's first gun range which is still operational today; called simply “the Range” today! In 1978, National Firearms Association (NFA) purchased Williamson Manufacturing Company from Winchester for $2 million dollars. NFA then renamed themselves the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). Their goal was to revive interest in shooting sports by promoting responsible firearm ownership and use across all demographics across America. This led to increased production for bothgun magazines as well as new print runings each year that continue today!

The canyon was named for the San Antonio and New Braunfels Railroad. It was first settled by the Houstons in 1876 and later by the Playfair family. The railroad passed through the canyon in 1865, making it one of earliest routes into central Texas. Longhorn cattle were drove to market down the canyon's length before railroads came along to bring them all the way to Wichita Falls (now Wichita, Kansas). The townsite that now occupies much of downtown Canyon grew up around a post office and store built on land donated by Tillery Brothers Coal Company president Elisha P. Houston in 1907. In 1912 John Wesley Powell discovered petroleum trapped under Eagle Ford Shale when he prospected for coal near present-day Canyon; this event led to development of oil shale production in that area. In 1915 President Woodrow Wilson established USFS headquarters at Lake Waco as part of his National Park Service program; this site would remain an important visitor center for Canyon until it closed in 1987 due to budget cuts. During World War II many local farmers produced food for military forces stationed in Central America as well as supplying troops with groceries and other supplies from American bazaars located throughout North Texas; ranching also played a role during that time period. After World War II most residents left their homes to live among friends or within commuting distance of jobs outside of town while various businesses thrived until they went out of business during economic recession leading up to the current day housing crisis in Canyon which began circa 2006 When Route 66 exits I-35 eastbound there are only two businesses open: Big Tex Ribs & White Castle right off exit ramps #2 which used to be called 'the Loop', now uses its original name Golden Corral RV Resort which opened back then too but closed?

The area was named after Canyon de la Hoya, a military post in Mexico City that served as a base of operations for General Antonio López de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American War. In 1881, canyon became part of the newly created McLennan County when it was established from parts of Bowie and Austin counties. The name may have come about because of its isolation from other areas within the county or because it formed an isolated outcrop on one of several canyons that straddled the Rio Grande River. The history of Canyon begins with its earliest residents. The Kiowa were among the first to settle hereabouts in what is now McLennan County. They came overland through San Antonio and arrived around 1825. By 1830 they had built their own village on what is now South Main Street in present-day Canyon Village. For many years this village remained an important center for trade between Kiowa and Comanche Indians living throughout much of west Texas and New Mexico Territory.. After Mexican independence from Spain in1821, most Indian tribes east of Fort Worth withdrew their support for Mexican rule but some continued to live along Anglo-Mexican border settlements until about 1835 when raids by American settlers began resulting in large numbers ofComanches being killed or captured at Nacogdoches (now Brazoria) Crossing on October 10th 1835.. In earnest pursuit several days later United States Army Captain James Fagan set up his encampment near present day Slaughterhouse Hill just south off US 62 north of Nacogdoches about 25 miles southwest of where today’s McAllen (Hidalgo) lies.. A long wagon trail led downriver to Nacogdoches then across open Mesilla Plain alluvium before terminating at Fagan’s encampment which lay at present site known as Slaughterhouse Hill Today this spot served as a Union prisoner depot during Alamo Campaign 1861-1865
