Canyon, Texas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. The name Canyon comes from the Spanish word "canal" meaning valley. The first white men to visit what is now Canyon were prospectors and traders who came across the Rio Grande in 1859. They named their little settlement after a nearby mountain peak, Canyons Rim (now Mount Hood). By 1865, some 100 families had gathered around the trading post of Alice Springs on the Onion River, about northeast of today's canyon center. In 1876 General Logan founded Fort Worth and urged settlers to move into what was then Hudspeth County so that he could protect them from Comanche raiders. In 1902 ownership of Rancho Rincon de la Salada passed from Republican Party member Abraham Bissell to Democrat soon-to-be Seneca resident John Hance. Construction began on a small irrigation canal called "the Colorado" which linked headwaters of both the Raton and White Rivers near present day Martinez and finally reached Canyon in 1907 when it became part of San Antonio National Forest. In 1916 construction began on an even larger irrigation canal called "the Chisholm", which connected two branches of the Salado River near present day Alpine and eventually reached Canyon in 1928. In 1929 A&P grocery store opened its doors at 10th Street & US 281 North in what is now downtown Canyon; canyon police department was established that year as well. By 1930 there were over 500 businesses concentrated within an urban area surrounded by rural ranching communitiesboasting a population size of 3,500 people with 1/4 million acres under cultivation! With both canals completed many residents moved out to other parts of Texas during World War II because they could no longer supported agriculture due to demand from military bases Crossroads Air Force Base (later Presidio) and Serve Corps Airfield ( later Camp Powell), located east of town limits

Jackson as a cattle ranch on the banks of the Colorado River. It became a mining and oil town during the 1920s and 1930s. The area around Canyon has been used for farming and ranching since then; however, it is now mostly a bedroom community for Dallas County residents. The first people to live in what is now Canyon were Mexican traders who traveled through that area on their way to Santa Fe. They named their ranch "Canyon" because they found an Echo Cave near by which sounded like canyon walls or cliffs. The first settlers arrived around 1881 when General James H Jackson decided to homestead his cattle ranch along the Colorado River just outside of present-day Canyon City. He named his property "Canyon". By 1890, there were over 100 people living in Canyon with huts made of logs and brush built over wagons drawn by horses or mules due to lack of transportation options at that time. In 1915, American Oil Company laid claim to about one-third of all remaining commercial land east of Oklahoma City across from what is now downtown Dallas. As part of its efforts to control development within city limits within its own corporate boundaries (which included much of downtownDallas), American Oil also began developing what would become known as "the canyon strip." This land ran from Kenedy Street south down Elm Street towards Grapevine Avenue (then called Commerce Boulevard) bisecting Trinity Parkway east and west - making it one of the most valuable tracts within city limits during this time period due largely to its location close enough to downtownDallas yet still permitting business owners access to extensive arterial streetscape infrastructure without having their properties surrounded by inner city blocks or neighborhoods where development could not be conducted without adversely impacting property values). One such early developer/occupier/user was Harry Moreshead who purchased parcels bordering Grapevine Avenue between Elm Street and Third Street in 1922 - establishing himself as one of Dallas's most influential citizens during this earliest phase of growth in downtownDallas). By 1934, American Oil had sold all but its holdings within "the canyon strip" including Grapevine Avenue - leading directly into today's newly developed East Village section located adjacent Baylor University while simultaneously eliminating any competition Cowboys DEVELOPMENT GROUP may have had for title thereto...
