In 1828, Mexican soldiers led by Antonio López discovered gold in what is now Canyon. This discovery caused great excitement in America and many families moved their homes from Mexico to take advantage of this new opportunity. For many years there was no one living in Canyon except for a few Indians who fished and gathered plants for food. In 1876, General James Fenton succeeded Santa Anna as president of Mexico after his army invaded California during the Mexican Revolution Fenton determined that if he could find gold within Mexican territory he would instead declare war on Spain so he ordered some men into canyon looking for treasure while others explored nearby valleys for ore deposits On July 11th 1876 two men working for Fenton became lost when they went down a ravine into an unnamed creek which followed course behind Academy Boulevard . They wandered until they came upon an old cabin about half way down which they entered without knocking When they asked who lived there it turned out to be Don José de la Cueva y Montoya (1811-1879), a wealthy landowner from Puebla City who had fled during the Mexican revolution . After exploring some more of this creek's waterfalls where miners often found silver dollars along with lead bullets worth $50 each don José decided that this must be where his ancestor Manuel de la Cueva y Montoya had found some Silver Mines six miles upstream at Cananegra Creek just before reaching Puebla City
Canyon is located in Medina County, Texas, about 20 miles south of downtown Austin and 50 miles northeast of Dallas. The canyon was named for the Virgin Mary who is said to have appeared to a CD prospector on the site in 1836. In 1892, cattle drives began from Canyon and other points along the Butterfield Overland Mail route through Medina County. By 1902, when the last stagecoach left for Dallas that year, Canyon had become a commercial center with stores and businesses such as The Grapesvine Hotel. In 1912, the first oil well was drilled in Canyon; by 1928 there were five wells operational in Canyon. Commercial development continued until after World War II when residents turned their focus towards agriculture due to scarce natural resources. There are now only a few residences remaining within the boundaries of Rancho Santa Fe de Luna which once included much of what is now Canyon National Park.
