Canyon is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 805 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Bedford, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. Canyon was founded in 1875 by John A. Gunn and his brother Wm. Hays Gunn, who were horse thieves and robbers. The first post office in Canyon was established on July 4, 1875 by George Fenton with the name of "Gunn's Ranch". The town started as a station on the Butterfield Railroad between Amarillo and Wichita Falls. In 1886, the railroad became the Texan Pacific Railway and canyon became its only stop south of Lubbock; however, it lost its status when the railroad merged into US-TX railway company in 1901. In 1902–03, president Theodore Roosevelt visited Canyon while he was campaigning for reelection to his third term as president; during their visit they stopped at an old wagon train depot which had been built near present day Canyon High School. Roosevelt called this Depot House "the White House of the West" and it served as his official residence from 1903 until 1909 when he moved into Washington City (later Arlington). In 1907 Mayor Oscar Bemis organized a petition drive to get building permits for what would become Canyon High School; after being denied multiple times due to lack of funds, Bemis finally got permits in 1908 and construction began that same year with classes starting on September 15th of that year; as school grades were not graded until November 1st (and therefore not listed on school records), high school students actually attended class from September 14th through October 10th under protest! The original campus consisted of just two classrooms with no other buildings or infrastructure other than these two classrooms – until 1913 when an addition togrades 3-8 were added which increased enrollment from 300 students to 600 students! That same year also saw construction begin on what would become Canyon’s gymnasium/auditorium/multipurpose room complex which included a fine Arts & Crafts style chapel/ auditorium with seating for 2200 people! In 1915 State Representative James Meeks introduced a resolution designating May 15th each year “Canyon Remembers America’s Day” in honor of President Woodrow Wilson’s birthday; after much debate among representatives from both parties over whether or not Memorial Day should be celebrated as such specifically within Texas (!), passage of this resolution led directly to enactment (by vote) by Congress Of A bill entitled “An Act To commemorate American Citizenship And The Service Of America On Memorial Day”! This act designated May 15th each year as National Memorial Day throughout all fifty United States!!!
