Canyon, Texas is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population of Canyon was 2,811 as of the 2010 census. The community is named after the canyon that runs through it. The first settlers in Canyon were people who came overland from New Mexico in 1851. They built a cabin on the east side of the canyon and started to farm the land. In 1875, they built a gristmill and got involved in cattle ranching. In 1907, they built a school and became an agricultural center. When oil hit Canyon in 1959, many businesses closed down because there wasn't enough market for their products. However, some people kept going and started new businesses such as general store, restaurant,and post office.Today there are still a few businesses that are run by the original settlers or their descendants

Canyon, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,026 at the 2010 census. Canyon was founded in 1887 by J. H. Morrison and other settlers as a small trading post on the banks of the Brazos River. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in 1901, and by 1905 it had become an important center for oil production on the Comanche Plain. After World War II, Canyon became a commuter town for Bastrop and San Antonio; its economy has changed little since then. The first people to live in what is now Canyon were Plains Arapaho who established their village near present-day Park Hill in 1887-88 while they were exploring new territory claimed by the Apache Nation. They were joined by Creek Indians from east of Nacogdoches about 1895 and soon began to build permanent homes thereabouts; these first residents are estimated to have numbered around fifty or seventy souls. The earliest written mention of Canyon comes from Waco Enterprise (March 26th 1880), which reported that two men--James Cook and John Jacks--had discovered petroleum fields nearby and had named this locality "Canyon" after one of their discoveries: "A well sunk down about 10 feet below water's surface called 'Cook' according to Mr Jacks'. It yielded oil." The name may have been derived from canyon meaning ravine or depression in Spanish (cf., Mexican Canyons). According to Frank Edery's classic history of early Houston Heights development, "oil drilling enlarged [Canyon] into an immense city with more than 6,000 inhabitants within a radius covering almost all Bastrop County". In fact,"canyon gradually replaced Houston asHouston's largest city" (Edery pgs 9-10). By 1910 "Canyon had become one of Texas' leading boomtowns", with over 2,500 residents employed in various aspects of oil production ("Houston Chronicle"). Although much has changed since William Fentonros first drilled gas wells here in 1901 – most notably suburban growth – Canyon retains its unique character as both an old American town full of reminders of its pioneer days as well as some major modern amenities such as high school football championships gamedays and rodeo events held at Myrick Coliseum on Commerce Street just west of downtown during summer months when Interstate 35 provides access for vehicular traffic only
Canyon was founded in 1859 by brothers John and James Gunn. They named it after the nearby Colorado River. The Gunn brothers developed a ranch there, and their descendants continue to live there today. Canyon is the most northerly city in Texas and the most recent of four towns in Midland County.
