The first post office in Canyon was established in 1888. Canyon has been a part of the Hudspeth County School District since its creation in 1907. In 2007, Canyon had an estimated population of 1,480 and is considered a rural community with sparse development outside the main village square. The town began as a cattle ranching community on some high ground near the mouth of the Rio Grande River. By 1901 it boasted a few stores and one hotel catering to Mexican-American settlers who worked on the ranches nearby or for railroads that passed through Hudspeth County. By 1909 there were six businesses open for business: two banks, several undertakers, three grocery stores/warehouses, four cotton ginners, and one school district superintendent’s office. A year later there were ten businesses open; seven banks (one new), five undertakers (two new), four grocery stores/warehouses (six total), two cotton ginsners (one new), and one school district superintendent’s office (three new). In 1916 canyon had only two schools—a Protestant elementary school serving grades K-6thinderry Road east of town limits)and an all-age Roman Catholic high school which served grade 7th to 12thinderry Road north of town limits—both built as responses to popular demand for “vacation schools” during World War I when many Texans boycotted military service because they saw no immediate need for their education while hostilities continued overseas despite Washington’s declaration that war was over on November 11th 1917 . By 1922 both schools had moved to larger buildings within the boundaries of what would become known as present day Canyon Village within walking distance from each other . In 1927 public works began improving streets leading into and out of town limits; water lines were also improved then with annexation by neighboring towns soon after providing increased access for residents to jobsites close by including an oil field off US 281 just northeast of town limits
