Canyon is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,564 as of the 2000 census. Canyon is located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first people to live in Canyon were the Lubbock and Fannin families who arrived in 1851. In 1896, the community was named for General George A. canyon after he led Ulysses S. Grant's army through its area during his campaign against Mexico City rebels. The name stuck and since then it has been home to a number of businesses and organizations including Canyon Valley Dam which was built by ranchers in 1935 and still uses water from that particular source today; Canyon High School which opened in 1951 and now offers high school education throughout Texas; also, Canyon United Methodist Church which has served the community since 1903. The current town hall was built in 1904 and replaced an earlier one that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. It is a two-story red brick building with stone quoins and a gable roof decorated with pointed arches and stone brackets. It features a clock tower topped by an octagon spire that rises to over 100 feet (30 m). The building also has gardens on three sides complete with sculptures, fountains, ponds, urns, paths, vernacular architecture styles including Victorians or Folk Victorian style homes dating back to about 1890; as well as some later examples such as Bungalow/American Craftsman Style housing from about 1930-1950s that retains many features from its pre-war predecessor but shows evidence of damage caused by Hurricane Ike in 2008 when much of the town was destroyed along with most of its infrastructure barring very few exceptions such as schools having reopened fully following extensive reconstruction efforts; finally there are some newer structures such as development near Interstate 35W known locally simply as "the I-35W side" because it is closest to where I-35 meets US Highway 281) which were allplanned before Harvey struck southern Williamson County causing significant destruction both within city limits (eastern neighborhoods) especially eastern edge around downtown while leaving much rural acreage largely unscathed providing more opportunities for infill development over time

Canyon, Texas is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Abilene-Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Canyon begins with two families who arrived in 1871 from San Antonio and began ranching on the present site of present day Canyon. In 1908, the name change from "Canon" to "Canyon". According to one source, it was due to a local rancher calling out for someone named Canon when he found his horse stranded in Canyon Creek. In 1916, canyon oil production began and soon became a major factor in Rancho Adobe's (later Rancho Encinal) success as a cattle and oil producer. In 1951, Interstate Highway 10 was built through the area and changed both business patterns and social life in Canyon; development then proceeded more slowly than elsewhere in Cameron County because there were few roads connecting it all together. Businesses moved away as people left for better opportunities or simply stopped coming because of lack of access or interest. After years of decline and neglect by developers overgrowth has taken hold again; however some businesses have gradually reopened while others are struggling to survive due to competition from newer developments nearby that offer larger paychecks and easier access to transportation services. A new park called Pinnacle Peak Park was dedicated on October 27th, 2017 near current day home of many residents which has helped bring back some life into Old Canyon while also attracting new visitors who enjoy hiking or skiing within easy reach as well as shopping options close by if needed
