When the first Americans set foot in what is now Canyon, Texas in 1846, they were faced with a daunting task. The area was inhabited by the Kiowa and Comanche Sioux and their powerful warriors. To protect the settlers from this hostile environment, the US Army built several forts over the next few years. One of these forts, Fort Bowie, was located on an important trading route between ranching groups and Mexico City. The fortifications were not abandoned until 1872 when it became evident that any attempt by Mexican forces to raid American settlements would result in violence. Today, Fort Bowie remains one of the most intact US military installations in Texas and is open to visitors every day of the year. The Coahuila Valley Campaign of 1847 was one of America’s earliest military campaigns against Native Americans. In this campaign, General Zachary Taylor led 5th Infantry Regiment into battle against 1st Apache Battalion at San Jacinto Creek near present-day Canyon. After successful engagements at San Jacinto Creek and Palo Alto River, Taylor’s army advanced northeast through what is now Nueces County towards Presidio de Albuquerque (now Albuquerque). On July 24th1847, after a day of skirmishing and raids along the Santa Fe Trail, General Crook’s 7th Infantry Regiment attacked Spanish Camp at Rio Arriba near present-day Durango. The Spanish force numbered about 200 soldiers but fought bravely until they withdrew under heavy fire from American artillery positioned nearby on Mesa del Rey Hill overlooking Rio Arriba Village. This victory marked a turning point in America’s occupation of New Mexico Territory; hereafter Hispanics would become predominant among American forces operating in that region
