Canyon is a town in Will County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Canyon was named after John Wesley Powell's 1868 journey up the Colorado River to its source. The first post office at Canyon was established in 1879. The town was founded by businessmen John W. Morehead and George H. Pickens as a stop on their way to sell goods collected along the river banks near Fort Bridger. In 1886, canyon became an incorporated municipality with a vote of 7-0 against recommendations from the Board of Supervisors to annex into Dallas because of lack of population growth in that area and other advantages offered by Dallas proper such as better school systems and more commercial development. By 1915 there were 5 businesses in Canyon with 123 residents; by 1920 there were 10 businesses with 1,562 residents; and by 1930 there were 16 businesses with 4,636 residents. From 1925 until 1957 Canyon had one school district; it merged into First Independent School District (FISD) on July 1, 1957 effective when FISD adopted a new form of government which included public schools for all students rather than separate elementary/middle/high schools for white Anglo children funded through property taxes levied on black homeowners within FISD boundaries
