Canyon, Texas is a small town located in Kerr County, Texas. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kerr County. Canyon is located on the banks of the San Antonio River and its namesake canyon lies to the east of town. The first settlers in this area were Menard and Dealey families who came from Kentucky in 1847. They erected a log cabin on what is now known as Rancho de la Mesa which they named after their family home in Kentucky. This cabin served as a stagecoach stop for travelers traveling between San Antonio and Austin and later became home to some of the earliest businesses in Canyon. The first post office opened in Canyon on December 12, 1857. In 1860, Charles Wolkowsky purchased Rancho de la Mesa from Menard and turned it into a cattle ranch which he called “Wolkowsky” or simply “Wolker” because he had bought it from John Wolker who operated it prior to his purchase from Charles Wolkowsky. By 1865, Wolkowsky had expanded his herd of cows so much that he decided to move them to what is now Phoenix Park where they were eventually sold to entrepreneur Jameson Forbes in 1872 for $1 million dollars making him one of the richest men ever born within limits of Texas! In 1902, local rancher Ozzie Nelson established an agricultural colony known as Colony Nochixton near present day Manor Road just east of Canyon proper with about seventy head of cows and eighty horses grazing among rolling hills covered with thorny brush representing one hundred acres! From there until 1924 when General MacArthur destroyed all but two thousand acres per tank during World War II – this land lay fallow while development continued unabated by civilian hands – Canyon gradually reverted back to its pre-war designation: an unincorporated community situated along Mexican (now US) Border Street outside the limits established by General MacArthur! Rancho de la Mesa passed away circa 1925 when it was sold by millionaire Ozzie Nelson to several heirs including Harry Vandenberg whose father also founded Vandenberg Oil Company adjacentmodern day Corpus Christi In 1934 General George Custer fought Indians at Adobe Walls northwest of here during his last campaign against Apache warriors led by Chief Little Wolf leading up to his famous victory over these raiders at Buena Vista Creek After World War II general ranches resumed operations however many have since been abandoned due primarily to overpopulation concerns associated with sprawl rather than natural resources
