For many years it served as the county seat for Dallas County; however, on February 25, 1907, Burleson became its own municipality whenDallas County was divided into eight municipalities: Burleson (later renamed Arlington), Farmers Branch (later renamedvelocity), Highland Park (later renamed Mesquite), Prairie View A&M University (now Rice University), Richardson International Airport Authority (now Richfield Energy Corporation), and Stickney Station Terminal Railway Company (later rename Union Pacific Railroad). On December 15, 1972, US 281 was rerouted through downtown Burleson to serve as an alternate route for I-635 traffic heading out westbound from downtown Dallas during rush hour; this made way for ExpressLane Traffic calming measures which were implemented later that year around downtown Dallas & Downtown Fort Worth areas following studies done by engineers working for both agencies involved & with input from citizens concerned about possible impacts on quality of life east of I-635 within those areas."
