At that point downtown had just over 4500 residents making it about one-tenth the size it is today; however with advances technology and increased development throughout East Austin west of I-35E (& concurrent extension I-10), Downtown Burrleons growth has accelerated rapidly since then culminating with its current 10K population & estimated 20+ businesses space on 6th Street between Lamar & Capitol Streets! In 1923, local citizens voted to secede from Tarrant County and form their own county within the state of Texas. The new county was named Baylor County after Samuel Lubbock Baylor (1821-1900), one of the founders of Dallas Cowboys football team fame and founder of Baylor University in Waco TX). As part of this secession process, burleson became part of Baylor County until it lost its status as an independent municipality in 1927 when other nearby communities rejoined Tarrant County proper. Today, Burleson remains a small town with some 500 residents who maintain close ties to their larger neighbors in neighboring Baylor County

In 1846, Burleson became the capital of Texas when Austin was moved from San Antonio to its present location.
