The city was known for its production of mechanical watches, and many watchmakers located their workshops in the downtown area. One of the earliest businesses to sell optical products was the Optical Store, which opened its doors in 1922. The store offered a wide variety of optic equipment including telescopes, binoculars, microscopes and other scientific instruments. In 1926, the town fathers established a chamber of commerce that purchased an old printing press and began selling photographic supplies as well. By 1941, the Optical Shop had been moved to its present location and continued to sell various optical devices until it closed in 1984. Other businesses that have operated in Burleson over time include: Bausch & Lomb Camera Sales (1929-1931), Wernicke's Watch Repair (1934-1945),the Clock Co., Inc.(1950-1960) and finally JB Hi-Fi/Audio (1986-present). Over time, Burleson has become one of America's most vibrant cities for watchmaking and optical products; today it is home to some of the largest concentrations of both independent clockmakers and optics shops in North America.

Burleson was founded by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1853 as a small town on an old Indian hunting ground. The first post office was established in 1854 and the first store opened in 1855. In 1865, Burleson became a school district and two years later it incorporated as a city. The original plat of Burleson included only one block of land which is now part of downtown. One important factor that contributed to Burleson's success was its commitment to quality education for all of its citizens through public schools, universities and other institutions such as Baptist College (now Sam Houston State University). Burbank Oil Refinery began operations in 1944 and has since been one of the most significant factors behind Burleson's growth as an oil town/city. The refinery has also added jobs throughout the years directly or indirectly related to it; many people have worked there during World War II when production increased because gasoline requirements increased following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. In recent years, much attention has been paid to downtown Burleson which contains several high-end retailers such as Macy’s Department Store and Sears & Roebuck

However, following the war Burleson experienced several decades of stagnation which ended with its current resurgence during the late 1990s through efforts by local entrepreneurs and government investment. Today, Burleson offers a variety of cultural attractions including art galleries, theatres, parks, golf courses and restaurants along with some quality educational institutions such as Texas Wesleyan University & Baylor University-Texas School of Law
Burleson was founded in 1876 by James L. Burleson and his brother, John F. Burleson. The brothers ran a grocery store and post office at the site of present-day Burkle Center. In 1887, they erected a two-story frame building on the south side of I-30 that became their business headquarters. They also developed an ornate garden near their home to provide employment for their family members. In 1916, the Burlesons sold their holdings in the business to A.J. Bigham and Sons for $150,000 cash plus future royalties from sales of inventory brought in from its operations around Texas and Mexico. The new owners renamed it "Burleson Bros." The company prospered until World War II when it was destroyed by fire; however, production restarted shortly afterward under new ownership as "Burleson-Haley" Corporation before being mothballed again during the war years due to wartime restrictions on commercial produce production. The company resumed production after the war but ceased operations completely after 1961 whenburlingtonspecificallymadealightweightsteellinecarandsolditselftoamerican automakersamembertotheNationalAutomobileManufacturers Association (NAM).
