Burleson is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,970 at the 2010 census. It lies about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of downtown Dallas and close to the Mexican border. The nearest city is Reynosa, Mexico. The town was founded by John Lubbock in 1879 as part of a land grant given to him by President James K. Polk. Lubbock named it after General Andrew Burleson who had fought in the Mexican-American War. Burleson developed into a small community with around 100 residents in 1905 when A&P Store and Restaurant became the first store on Main Street and post office opened there that year. The first school was built in 1907 on what is now East Second Street, and two years later an addition was made to the west side which served as a movie theater until it burned down in 1942. In 1927 burleson annexed sections of Holmes County which included Spring Branch east of I-10 and Grapevine south of US 75/I-635; these annexations gave burleson its current total population figure of 3,970 people today dating back to 1967 when those areas were annexed together as one municipality according to ordinance No. 9296 passed by the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court on November 2nd, 1967 In 1990 annexation of Barker City took place due north from burleson along US 71 just past FM 1960 On December 5th 1994 another annexation taking place within 1 mile of where burleson currently sits occurred with Hope Township encompassing all but 0.3 square miles located between FM 1960 & SH 259 approximately midway between Cottonwood Rd./US 71 & FM 1960). These recent annexations have increased populations even further making it difficult to determine an accurate number for what constitutes “Burlesdon’s” present day boundaries

This victory marked an turning point in Texas history; since then, Texan armies have frequently fought against Mexican forces across much of southern Mexico- often resulting in bloody battles that left many dead or wounded soldiers behind.
