Burleson, Texas is a town located in the far northwest corner of the state of Texas. It is bordered by Waller County to the north and east, McLennan County to the south, and Brazoria County to the west. The population was 6,827 at the 2010 census. The first gun target in Burleson was erected on May 25, 1881, in memory of Johnnie Rayburn who had been killed while serving with Company F, 1st Infantry Regiment (Citizen’s Volunteer Corps) during the American Civil War. The target was made from a log that had been cut down near what is now White Rock Lake. A second gun target was erected on July 2nd of that year in honor of Private William Hinson who died during battle at Mansfield just short of Fort Worth. The third target was erected on October 3rd in memory of Corporal James Prentice who fell within range of an artillery shell whilst serving with Company K, 4th Cavalry Regiment at Big Spring Battlefield. A fourth Gun Target Site Monument was dedicated on December 20th, 1994 in commemoration of World War II veteran Leroy “Pete” Goodman who lost his life within range of enemy fire while operating as a radar operator aboard USS Lexington (CV-2) off Okinawa. The monument consists of a steel platform topped by a statue honoring Goodman which can be accessed from Interstate 10 approximately thirteen miles south of Burleson. On February 14th, 2003 Burleson hosted its regionalUSAShootout Contest which saw local marksmanship enthusiasts compete against each other using handguns and shotguns for a chance to win bragging rights and prizes including $1,000 cash and two firearms apiece from five different manufacturers. The contest has since become an annual event drawing participants from all over Southeast Texas combined with entries from as far away as Oklahoma City and Las Vegas Nevada! In addition to prize money there are also numerous bragging rights associated with taking home one or more participating weapons including being entered into monthly draws where winners receive gift certificates worth up to $100 each! This important event helped Burleson become known as an educated and affluent community. Additionally, he served as mayor of Burleson from 1876 to 1880 and1892-1896.
