Burleson was founded in 1851 by Julius Warner Burleson as a small settlement on an east-west railroad track. The name originated from Spanish language words meaning "wild boar" and "burro", which were used to describe the local cattle herds. In 1886, Burleson became the county seat of Harris County. In 1925, the community of White Sands was founded nearby and soon afterwards it merged into Burleson. On November 5, 1959, a tornado touched down near Burleson and destroyed most of the town center. Many homes and businesses were damage or destroyed outright including William Hargrave's general store which stood until 1965 when it was replaced by a new store building that still stands today. In 1984-1985 Hurricane Rita made landfall in Southeast Texas causing extensive destruction throughout Harris County including much damage to properties in Fort Bend County outside of Galveston Island where Burleson sat on top of an oil platform created from salt water currents during Hurricane Rita's passage through those waters
