Burleson is a city in Sam Houston County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,731 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. When first settled by Texans in 1836, Burleson was called Pearland and later Post Oak. In 1859, when Sam Houston became governor of Texas and decided to make east Texas a separate seat of government under his jurisdiction, he changed the name to Burleson after General Sam Houston's older brother-in-law and friend General John Fenton Burrisson. The town started as just one small farmstead with some fifty settlers in 1861. By 1870, Burleson had developed into a two-phase community with numerous businesses and residences. During Reconstruction in America following the American Civil War (1861-1865), Burleson became an important center for African Americans working on farms around the state of Texas during that time period. Many white farmers were forced out of their homes or relocated to new settlements such as Galveston or Austin due to legislation passed by President Abraham Lincoln shortly before his assassination on April 14, 1865. Many black men worked on farms throughout Reconstruction and many families continued to reside in Burleson until they left for new homes after the end of Reconstruction in 1865. In 1895, James Jealous organized what is considered to be the first black political party in Texas when he ran for office as a Democrat against incumbent Republican Congressman Reuben Barnes from Pearland County.[1] After several unsuccessful attempts at electioneering over several years between 1895 and 1899,[2][3] Jealous finally won election as mayor of Dallas on November 3rd, 1899;[4] making him Dallas' first African American Mayor after Reconstruction ended less than two years earlier. Since then, various public offices have been held by citizens who are either Black or Hispanic including: Mayor (1999-2003), State Representative (1973-1981), City Councilmember (2005 - present), City Manager (2006 - present)

Burleson was founded in 1848 by John P. Burleson and his wife, Laura. The town was named for Captain James H. Burleson of the Texas Rangers, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as a U.S. Minister to Mexico City. In 1854, the town was renamed for General Sam Houston after Houston's successful campaign against Mexican forces at San Jacinto Creek. The first post office was established in 1854 and the name changed to Burleson again in 1865 when it became a municipality within Travis County. The city of Austin moved from its original location east of downtown to Burleson in 1957 and it remained an independent municipality until 1969 when it merged with Austin into one entity known as Texas' capital city
