One account says that Jethro Beebe led a wagon train of settlers through central Texas before moving east to found this new community on the banks of Buffalo Bayou near present day Amarillo. After some debate over which river they should cross, they selected the Buffalo River because it appeared to be wide enough for both wagons and horses to go across without getting bogged down or sinking into mud flats below their destination - something not possible with other rivers available at that time. A post office named "Buffalo" was established here on November 15, 1839 under territorial jurisdiction; however, no mail ever arrived due to attacks by Indians along the trail during this early period of US Postal service development (the US Post Office didn't open until1872). According to one source, gristmill pioneer James Hogg opened his mill just northeast of present day Burleson on January 17, 1840 having arrived from Illinois two days earlier via stagecoach!
