Burleson is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Burleson began as a cattle town in 1876 and grew to become an agricultural center with sawmills, slaughterhouses, and a large phosphate mine. The community was named for General James H. Burleson who served as a governor of Texas from 1901 to 1911. The Burleson Mills were destroyed by fire in 1907 but were rebuilt and became one of the largest textile mills in the country during World War II. Today, Burleson's primary industry is tourism with its annual rodeo events and cowboy-riding festivals held at various locations around town. The original name of the town was "Cottonwood". In 1886 David Dudley Post set out from Galveston on horseback to found what he called "the new cottonwood settlement" (later renamed "Burleson"). He named it after General James H. Burleson who had served as governor of Texas from 1901 to 1911 and helped establish the state's oil industry.General John Chilton served as postmaster general for Williamson County from 1902 until 1906 when he was succeeded by Post's son-in-law George Wofford Browning III . On March 14, 1912 Mrs. Lillie Matson founded the first Methodist church in Williamson County when she built a log cabin on her land north of present day Main Street .
