Burleson, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Bowie County. The population was 104,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by Stephen F. Austin in 1836 as a trading post on what is now Burleson Creek east of present day Bowie County. In 1868, Burleson became an independent city and was named for General James Hogg, who had led Confederate forces during the American Civil War and later served as governor of Texas. In 1907, burlesoned citizens voted to create a new borough within their city limits which would become home to most of its economic activity outside of its original boundaries; this new borough became known as Bowie Heights. The City Council first granted annexation to Bowie Heights in 1916; it was fully annexed into the city in 1951 after a referendum vote by residents approved Measure 2B, which set aside land within Bowie Heights for development into a municipally run airport and other public purposes including retail space for local businesses and office space for government officials while preserving most of the residential section along Elm Street between Houston Street and Lamar Street (now Anschutz Medical Campus). The population reached 100,000 by 1990 but has since declined due to suburbanization and loss of jobs in downtown Burleson through innovation initiatives such as Myriad Health Inc., TX Instruments Ltd., TX Water Company et al.;[2] although there are plans underway to revive downtown Burleson with redevelopment projects such as One First Place (formerly known as "Homeworld" mall), OfficeMax/Eveready Corporate Center & Fashion Outlet Warehouse,[3][4][5] courthouse expansion (Phase I & II) [6], rezoning from single family homes to multiple units[7] & more.[8] Burleson began receiving attention from developers when Myriad Health Inc., TX Instruments Ltd., TX Water Company et al., announced plans to build an $81 million medical campus adjacent to Interstate 10 exit 805 on what is now US 290 Business Loop south side;[9][10][11][12] however this project stalled due to environmental concerns over potential water impacts from construction activities which were not disclosed until after construction began;[13][14] following further revelations about these issues, developer Melody Homes agreed finally to sell land located adjacent I-10 exit 805 off Elm Road near FM 279 – just north of current day Hwy 287 – backto the City on April 15th,[15][16] averting any potential conflict that could have arisen should they not have done so earlier given that negotiations were ongoing before Melody's sale took place rather than upon her purchase.[17][18]; also following this agreement another developer proposed developing undeveloped land across I-10 Exit 805 off US 290 Business Loop south side adjoining Spring Branch Creek opposite current day FM 264 Bridge - again averting any potential conflict that may have arisen should they not have pursued this opportunity prior given that negotiations were ongoing before their proposal came forward).[19].
Burleson was founded in 1835 by John W. Burleson and his wife, Nancy. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center of cotton production. In 1859, the Texas Legislature created the first county in Texas, named for John W. Burleson. The County seat was moved to a new location in nearby Amarillo in 1865, but Burleson continued to grow and become an important manufacturing center. By the early 1920s, Burleson had more than 2,000 residents and was one of the largest cities in Texas. The city experienced significant growth during World War II as it became a key military base for the war effort. After the war ended,burleson declined significantly until becoming an economically depressed area once again during the late 1990s and 2000s.
