Burkburnett, Texas is home to the oldest taser in the United States. The device was first patented on December 4, 1892 by John D. Kirkpatrick and George H. Armstrong. It was designed as a "mechanical means for stunting or subduing animals." At the time, it was seen as a humane way to control livestock and other domesticated animals. The original prototype taser consisted of two metal rods with a green light at one end and a black button at the other. The first settlers in what is now Burkburnett were German immigrants who arrived in 1827. They named their community "Waldebrandt" after Friedrich Wilhelm Waldenberger, a Hessian nobleman who had settled in that region some years earlier. In 1848, when Texas became a republic, Texans decided to rename the community "Burkburnett" after General John Haltom's victory at Palo Alto Hill during the Mexican-American War (1846-1847). In 1893, local farmers began to grow cotton and raised livestock on land that they donated to the townspeople free of charge. During World War II, local manufacturers produced munitions for the war effort and also manufactured jeans for troops and civilians alike. After the war ended in 1945, many businesses closed down but new ones sprang up including a grocery store and post office which remain open today as BURKSTONE HEIGHTS GVFC INC.. In recent years Burkburnetti has been experiencing growth with initiatives like its own school district which opened in 2013 and plans for an arena/park as well as construction of two homesheets called "The Villages". Today Burkburnett remains largely agricultural with a few small businesses providing services such as shipping containers from inland ports to nearby cities or handling crops on large plantations out near Wimberley Ridge State Park
